Professor Choi is spending a 2 year sabbatical in the labs beginning January 2008. He is an associate Professor in the Department of Metal and Materials Engineering at the Kangnung National University, in South Korea. Prof. Choi is performing research in electronic, environmental, and medical applications of nanotube and nanoporous materials.

Professor Song is spending a sabbatical year in the lab starting August 2007. She is an Assistant Professor in the department of chemistry in Sunchon National University, South Korea. Her research interests are in the synthesis and optical properties of nanomaterials.

Beniamino is a graduate student with Francesco Geobaldo at the Polytechnic University of Turin department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering, who is visiting the lab for 6 months starting May 2008.

Sam is visitin the lab on loan from the Japan Patent Office from July 2008-June 2009.

Professor Miskelly is spending a sabbatical in the lab starting July 2008. He is a Professor in the department of Chemistry at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

Joe joined the Sailor group in 2008. He received a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Purdue in 2007. His research interests include medical applications of nanotechnology, nanoscale material synthesis, and surface chemistry. His current project involves engineering multifunctional nanoparticles for the delivery of chemotherapeutic agents.

Sara joined the Sailor group in Fall 2003. Her research project involves construction of a "Smart Petri Dish" --integrating live cells with porous Si photonic crystals for biosensing applications. She is developing the chemistry and materials science to place microscopic sensor pads under live cells and cell colonies in order to create a real-time tissue-based biosensor.

Luo joined the Sailor research group in January 2006. He received his B.S. degree from Peking University. His project involves the study of luminescent porous silicon photonic crystals, and applications of particles containing spectral bar-codes to various biological assays.

Joe joined the Sailor group in 2004. His project involves developing the chemistries to target nanoparticles to diseased tissue, using superparamagnetic iron oxide and silicon. This project is in collaboration with the research groups of Sangeeta Bhatia (MIT) and Erkki Ruoslahti (UCSB/Burnham Institute).

Anne joined the Sailor group in 2004. She graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from Ithaca College in 2003 where her research used kinetic studies to examine the effects of mixed solvents on the elimination and exchange reactions of halogenated phenethyl compounds. She spent the summers of 2001 and 2002 at the Universiteit Leiden, the Netherlands working on this kinetics study. Her project involves using porous silicon "smart dust" photonic crystals for detection of pollutants in air and methane in seawater. Her problem focuses on minimizing analyte interference and improving specificity in her photonic materials.

Manuel joined the Sailor group in the Fall of 2004. His project involves assays of enzymatic activity in porous silicon photonic crystal films. He is placing enzymes in porous Si photonic crystal hosts and evaluating their ability to sense various biomolecules or cell types. He works in collaboration with the research group of Farooq Azam at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and with the Hitachi Chemical Research Center in Irvine, CA.

Brian joined the Sailor group in 2005. His project involves improving the specificity of porous silicon photonic crystal sensors by incorporating specific non-biological recognition elements and concentrators into the materials.

Jennifer joined the Sailor group as a rotation student from Bioengineering in Sept, 2005. Her Ph.D. project involves the preparation and use of nanostructured microparticles for cancer therapeutics and diagnostics. She is currently focusing on the treatment of ovarian cancer, in collaboration with Prof. Stephen Howell in the UCSD Cancer Center.

Michelle joined the Sailor group as a rotation student from Bioengineering in June, 2006. Her project involves the design, construction, and use of encoded nanostructured microparticles. Her graduate student mentor is Shawn Meade, and her project represents a collaboration with Cellular Bioengineering, inc.

Elizabeth joined the Sailor group as a rotation student from the Bioengineering department in the summer of 2006. Her Ph.D. project involves the use of nanostructured microparticles in high-throughput bioassays.

Adrian is a Ph.D. student in the department of Chemistry and Biochemistry who began his studies in the Sailor group in Jan 2007. He holds a BS degree in Chemistry from the University of Arizona. His project involves the preparation and characterization of gas vapor sensors based on graded porous photonic crystals, in collaboration with our industrial partners at AVAAK, inc. His graduate student mentors are Anne Ruminski and Brian King.

Chiachen joined the Sailor group in Fall 2007 as a Ph.D. student in the Materials Science and Engineering program. Her research project involves construction of a "Smart Petri Dish" --integrating live cells with porous Si photonic crystals for biosensing applications. She is currently working with graduate student mentor Sara Alvarez.

Joe joined the Sailor group in Fall 2007 as a Ph.D. student in the Materials Science and Engineering program. His research project involves controlled loading, trapping, and release of protein-based drugs from nanostructured porous Si photonic crystals.

Maggie joined the lab in Summer 2008. She is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Her research project involves sensing of airborne pollutants using porous Si photonic crystals. Her graduate student mentor is Adrian Garcia Sega.

Lauren joined the lab in Summer 2008. She is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Her research project involves liquid-based sensing using porous Si photonic crystals. Her graduate student mentor is Anne Ruminski.

Alex is a UCSD Chemistry major who joined the Sailor group in Summer 2008. His graduate student mentor is Elizabeth Wu. His project involves the study of controlled loading, trapping, and release of drugs from porous Si.

Kim is a Chem/Biochemistry major who joined the Sailor group in November of 2006. She is currently working with her graduate student mentor Luo Gu, preparing photoluminescent nano porous silicon particles for drug loading and delivery experiments.

Brittany is a UCSD Biochemistry/Chemistry major who joined the Sailor group in January 2008. Her graduate student mentors are Anne Ruminski and Brian King. She works on low power sensors for chemical toxins and pollutants using porous Si-based photonic crystals.

Sophie is a UCSD Environmental Chemistry major who joined the Sailor group in the summer of 2007. Her graduate student mentors are Anne Ruminski and Adrian Garcia Sega. She works on low power sensors for chemical toxins and pollutants using porous Si-based photonic crystals. In the Fall of 2007, Sophie won the UCSD Dean's Undergraduate Research Award for her studies of the effects of current density on chemical sensitivity in her sensors.

Matthew is a UCSD Chemistry major who joined the Sailor group in the summer of 2007. His mentor is Adrian Garcia Sega. He works on low power sensors for chemical toxins and pollutants using porous Si-based photonic crystals.

Sarah is a Westview High School student, having worked in the Sailor group for the summers of 2006, 2007, and 2008. She is working on a project for the San Diego Science Festival, constructing an instructional kit involving nanosensors for environmental pollutants. The sensor elements consist of porous Si photonic crystals.

Anna is a high school student who worked in the Sailor group in the summer of 2007. She is shown with the robot she built for the LEGO robotics challenge. With her fellow team members, Anna successfully integrated a chemical-sensing chip into the robot. The robot sounded an alarm when it encountered vapors from a toxic chemical known as a volatile organic compound (VOC). She is making improvements in response and sensitivity to her robot this summer. Her graduate mentor is Anne Ruminski.
