Professor Choi is spending a 2 year sabbatical in the labs beginning January 2008. He is an associate Professor in the Department of Metal and Materials Engineering at the Kangnung National University, in South Korea. Prof. Choi is performing research in electronic, environmental, and medical applications of nanotube and nanoporous materials.

Joe joined the Sailor group in 2008. He received a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Purdue in 2007. His research interests include medical applications of nanotechnology, nanoscale material synthesis, and surface chemistry. His current project involves engineering multifunctional nanoparticles for the delivery of chemotherapeutic agents.

Sara joined the Sailor group in Fall 2003. Her research project involves construction of a "Smart Petri Dish" --integrating live cells with porous Si photonic crystals for biosensing applications. She is developing the chemistry and materials science to place microscopic sensor pads under live cells and cell colonies in order to create a real-time tissue-based biosensor.

Luo joined the Sailor research group in January 2006. He received his B.S. degree from Peking University. His project involves the study of luminescent porous silicon photonic crystals, and applications of particles containing spectral bar-codes to various biological assays.

Joe joined the Sailor group in 2004. His project involves developing the chemistries to target nanoparticles to diseased tissue, using superparamagnetic iron oxide and silicon. This project is in collaboration with the research groups of Sangeeta Bhatia (MIT) and Erkki Ruoslahti (UCSB/Burnham Institute).

Anne joined the Sailor group in 2004. She graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from Ithaca College in 2003 where her research used kinetic studies to examine the effects of mixed solvents on the elimination and exchange reactions of halogenated phenethyl compounds. She spent the summers of 2001 and 2002 at the Universiteit Leiden, the Netherlands working on this kinetics study. Her project involves using porous silicon "smart dust" photonic crystals for detection of pollutants in air and methane in seawater. Her problem focuses on minimizing analyte interference and improving specificity in her photonic materials.

Manuel joined the Sailor group in the Fall of 2004. His project involves assays of enzymatic activity in porous silicon photonic crystal films. He is placing enzymes in porous Si photonic crystal hosts and evaluating their ability to sense various biomolecules or cell types. He works in collaboration with the research group of Farooq Azam at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and with the Hitachi Chemical Research Center in Irvine, CA.

Jennifer joined the Sailor group as a rotation student from Bioengineering in Sept, 2005. Her Ph.D. project involves the preparation and use of nanostructured microparticles for cancer therapeutics and diagnostics. She is currently focusing on the treatment of ovarian cancer, in collaboration with Prof. Stephen Howell in the UCSD Cancer Center.

Anna is a high school student who worked in the Sailor group in the summer of 2007. She is shown with the robot she built for the LEGO robotics challenge. With her fellow team members, Anna successfully integrated a chemical-sensing chip into the robot. The robot sounded an alarm when it encountered vapors from a toxic chemical known as a volatile organic compound (VOC). She is making improvements in response and sensitivity to her robot this summer. Her graduate mentor is Anne Ruminski.
